I am going to El Paso, Texas to offer my heart and arms and strong back and whatever else I have to those coming to the United States.
My family is not native to this country - in the mid 1700s my English ancestors came to America, and in the late 1800s my Irish family arrived.
I believe in the Statue of Liberty as a living symbol of freedom and the promise of hope. ..and my way of reclaiming the opportunities offered to my ancestors is to be a welcoming face for those who are legally entering our country today.
Emma Lazarus wrote: Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
The 11th Chapter of the Book of Matthew, verses 28-30, which are my favorite verses of the Bible say: Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
I am responding to this call to offer encouragement, hope and tangible love for those who yearn to create a better life for their family members. Your gifts will be used to buy shoe laces that are removed by ICE; lip balm for those who are dehydrated and who still have a long way to go; gas for vans that take folks to the airport and bus depot so they can reunite with sponsors and family; and who knows what else....I'm quite sure crayons and glitter glue are real possibilities!
Annunciation House in El Paso offers hospitality, a cot, water, PB&J and love. Gifts to my fund will be used to offset some of my costs getting and staying there for 2+ weeks, and to buying whatever is needed at the time.....yes possibly nail polish to lighten a woman's heart, or clean socks for those whose feet I might wash.
Please pray for me, for the travelers and for our world. And share my link with those you think are sick and tired of seeing our country reject the vulnerable, the poor and the other.
Your gifts to the Annunciation House are great. https://annunciationhouse.org/
I plan to email updates as I go --so let me know if you want to hear about my experiences.
Thank you to all of you who are woven into the grace I take and share.
