GLENCLIFF MURAL PROJECT

Tax deductible
The Glencliff Neighborhood Group (GNG) is based in the 16th District of Nashville, and is a long- standing, active group that works to support community improvements. Seventeen years ago, GNG partnered with the district and CSX to commission and install a mural on Nolensville Pike(pictured above), near the Nashville Zoo. For years, the mural has served as an entryway to the neighborhood and a point of civic pride. Over time, the original mural has been degraded beyond repair due to sun damage, and has further been destroyed by vandalism from graffiti, as shown in the recent photo from the previous page.

As South Nashville continues to grow, Nolensville Road remains a main artery for our city. On average, it sees more than 60,000 car trips per day. Traffic congestion is a daily challenge - but the wide, straight lanes also lend themselves to speeding when traffic is light.

The Glencliff Neighborhood Group wants to refresh the mural. Not only is it an opportunity to showcase a talented local artist's work and demonstrate the rich diversity of South Nashville, it will also create visual beauty in the midst of stressful stretches of heavy traffic. Research has shown that colorful art and murals in neighborhoods can help as a traffic calming measure as well. The neighborhoods in areas around the mural, including Glencliff, Paragon Mills, Radnor, and Caldwell-Abbay Hall, will benefit from the spirit of inclusiveness that the mural will bring,
and the vibrant, positive, and on-trend artwork will help to draw new businesses and beautify this stretch of Nolensville Road. Neighbors will volunteer their time to help clean up the area, assist in priming the supports, and help with the fundraising and dedication event, along with providing ongoing monitoring of needed maintenance and repair. Fundraising is underway, and GNG has identified an artist who will begin the project in April 2023, with an expected completion date of June 2023. Your support is necessary to bring this vital neighborhood beautification project to life!

Project Budget
GNG has already secured $10K in grants from Metro Arts and the Nashville Zoo for the project. Our goal is to raise additional funds for the project. Seventy percent of funding raised for this project will directly support the artist and materials needed for the mural. The total budget includes the following line items:
  • Funding for the artist, including design, renderings, and labor;
  • Cost of paint, primer coatings, and protective coverings;
  • Ongoing power washing services;
  • Scaffolding rental;
  • Private duty police officers to provide safety for traffic flow during painting
  • and cleaning;
  • Food and bottled water for artist & volunteer work sessions;
  • Landscaping around the mural;
  • Signage and printing; and
  • Community celebration and mural dedication expenses.
