I’m Kara — a wife, a mother, and a survivor. I never thought I’d be here, asking for help. But after years of fighting to protect my children and rebuild our lives from the ground up, we’re facing one final hurdle that we can’t overcome alone: we’re at risk of losing our home.

For years, I was forced to pay nearly $3,000 a month in alimony to the man who abused me and my children — a system that prioritized technicalities and money over safety. That same final assault left me with injuries including a severe concussion, a torn knee requiring a total knee replacement revision, damage to my heart requiring heart surgery, and more. All while continuing to fight in court to keep my kids safe. The cost of survival has been constant.

Then came 2023.

My husband lost his job during the tech layoffs — our secondary surviving source of income gone. Just as we thought we were headed for relief, he sustained a back injury and underwent five spinal surgeries in just three months, leaving him unable to work.

During this same time, he had to have his gall bladder removed and sinus reconstruction surgery. My children have experienced multiple medical encounters, including my daughter having surgery as well and my son breaking his arm at school. Through it all, we have spent countless amounts on therapy to help us heal from the psychological injuries from it all.

We’ve repeatedly had to restart everything with nothing but grit, resilience, and each other.

Now, we owe $50,000 to the bank, and we’re facing moving expenses and basic costs of starting over. We’ve weathered every storm that’s come our way, but this one is bigger than us — and time is running out.

We’re asking for $60,000 to:

• Pay off the home debt and avoid foreclosure

• Cover moving and housing transition costs

• Secure deposits, utilities, and basic needs so our children have stability again

We have fought so hard and we never ask for help. But this time — we need our community.
