Give hope, be the miracle!

My close friend and mentor journeyed very far to be where he is today. I am grateful for the role he had played in my life and continues to play with such magnitude and significance. Yet, life isn't all about giving back - mostly it's about doing the right thing. When we see someone suffering we want  to offer a helping hand, land an ear, a shoulder to cry on. When we see an opportunity to do something meaningful and perhaps life-changing... well that's not a kind of offer that is always sitting there waiting to be scooped up.

I have seen my good friend overcome many challenges and obstacles in life with determination, faith, and unimaginable gratitude. I chose to omit his name due to the delicate nature of this campaign and his current life circumstances. If you have a further interest in speaking with me about his situation or perhaps want to reach out to him directly, please don't hesitate to ask.

During his years teaching shechita, my friend became somewhat of an expert on knives and many halochic elements associated with shechita. He was inclined to author "esek hashechita" - a guide for shochtim in order to make more available to others the knowledge he had acquired over the years. In 2016 however it all came to a halt as his son went through a psychotic breakdown - he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and required (and continues to require) around the clock care.

Working away from home became unrealistic and my friend took on blade smithing in hopes of turning it into an income that would help support his family. As a shochet, experimenting with blades was something of a hobby, a passion even. With no investment capital to dream of, he began working in a small shack that had previously been used as a succah. Despite unfavorable weather and numerous roof collapses, he managed to produce a few chalafim and kitchen knives throughout the winter. Without proper equipment and work space it was a very inefficient and frustrating experiment. Snow, rain, and freezing weather were far from helpful in developing a solid customer base and adequate production. But the bills kept piling up and his aching hands just kept on crafting to the best of his abilities.

Over the past year, I've had the zchus of helping my friend but without a long-term sustainable plan. I am not a man of great means and am not able to, without your help, lay the ground work for even a possibility of a sustainable small business. After carefully reviewing the finances necessary for this project to get off the ground, we are looking to raise $2,000 in the immediate future to cover the start-up costs of work space, equipment, and raw materials.

For those of us who are blessed with good things in life, be it success in business, a beautiful family, etc. we must never take those things for granted. Hashem gives to us in a way that we give to others. Please be thoughtful and kind with the resources that were given to you.
May we always merit to give.
