Gifts for Homeless Middle Schoolers
Donation protected
I was sitting in my son's parent-teacher conference last month and a teacher mentioned how some kids don't turn their camera on because of their living situation- homeless and not wanting everyone to see their situation.
This stopped me dead in my tracks. Maybe I am naive and focused on my bubble and yes, privileged, but I couldn't get over the shock and those words out of my mind. I couldn't imagine that some kids my son goes to school with were homeless or facing a holiday season with no warmth nor gifts (and I am sure more things I don't want to imagine).
Days later, I was still thinking about this and shared it with a co-worker. Their words completely captured how I was feeling "How do we let this happen to kids". Typing this even makes me tear up all these weeks later. I know this topic is complicated and maybe people will try to politicize it but trust that this is coming from a place of love and connectedness.
I am working with my son's school, our neighborhood school, to help identify the families in need. I am waiting on a list from the school to help identify gender, ages, items in need, etc. but I didn't want to delay in sending out my appeal.
My plea: please donate whatever you can, $5, $10, $20, or more as much as you feel you can give, to help. I will take every cent donated (as well as the money I personally donate) to buy gift cards and gifts for these homeless 13-15 yr olds (and siblings if I can raise enough).
Nothing has ever moved me to act like this and I don't know what kind of impact I can make but I had to act and I hope you will join me. I stumbled upon this quote earlier this year and I wanted to share it with you.
Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much~ Helen Keller.
Thank you for helping to bring smiles and love to kids in our community.
I would like to deliver gifts by 12/23 so please donate by 12/18 if you are able.
