My name is Hannah, and I’m organizing gift baskets for families staying at Dell Children’s Hospital in memory of my son, Alexander. Alexander was born on Halloween 2017 and underwent open heart surgery at just a week old. He spent a month recovering at Dell before passing away on December 2, 2017. During that time, I experienced firsthand the overwhelming stress and uncertainty that families face while caring for a child in the hospital.
This project is my way of honoring Alexander and staying connected as his mother, even though he isn’t physically with us. I want to offer comfort and care to at least 20 families who are navigating similar challenges. Each basket will include self-care items like soap, face masks, tea, blankets, and adult coloring books, as well as books and stuffed animals for families to share with their babies. I’m also including healthy snacks and financial support in the form of gas cards or gift cards for food places within walking distance of the hospital.
My hope is that these baskets provide a small sense of relief and comfort to families during an incredibly difficult time. I want them to know they’re not alone, and that there are people who care and understand what they’re going through. I plan to deliver the baskets on November 1st, close to Alexander’s birthday, as a way to honor his memory and support others in need.
