Hi everyone, my name is Shreya, I am a second year Optometry student at Cardiff University.
I’m so excited to share that this September, I’ll be traveling to the beautiful city of Cape Coast, Ghana, for two weeks as part of an incredible outreach program.
Alongside five of my fellow Optometry students from Cardiff University, I’ll be volunteering to provide free eye tests, glasses, and hospital referrals to people in rural communities with limited access to eye care.
Vision is something many of us take for granted, but for millions worldwide, poor eyesight affects their education, jobs, and daily lives. In Ghana, where there are fewer than 150 Optometrists for a population of over 30 million, many people suffer from preventable conditions simply because they can’t afford treatment or don’t have access to an eye clinic.
During our time in Cape Coast, we’ll also be working with the Optometry Department at the University, exchanging skills, sharing equipment, and helping to strengthen local eye care services for the future.
We are also collecting old glasses that you no longer need and could benefit someone else. If you have any glasses, sunglasses, sun hats, or toys you'd like to donate, please let me know.
Every donation will go directly toward providing glasses, medical treatment, and cataract surgeries-life-changing interventions that restore sight and independence. Even a small contribution can make a huge impact, and I’d be so grateful for your support in bringing clear vision to those who need it most!!
