For many there will come a time when we have to step up and care for our parents. Due to my parents’ medical history I knew that would be reality for me at some point in the future. My plan for 2023 was to work and build up my finances to prepare for when that day came.

Dec. 7th, 2022 my mom went into the hospital to have 3 toes on her right foot amputated. The next night while my father was visiting my mom they found my him unresponsive in the hospital cafeteria; he passed away the following month. Also in the following months my mother went on to have both legs amputated below the knees along with 3 fingers on her right hand.

After these events it was apparent that future I was preparing for had become a reality.

Over the past year plus I’ve been focusing on doing all I can for my mother to make her as comfortable as possible. I’ve been taking care of home here in Stockton, while still trying to keep my home in LA. At the start of the whole situation doctors didn’t think my mother had much longer to live, but she has continued to prove them wrong. And although her recent heart procedure was high risk, she showed her strength and beat the odds.

Therefore my duty as a son is not yet done. I’m grateful for this time I’ve been able to spend with my mother and the new memories we’ve been able to create. At the same time my responsibilities as a caretaker have been challenging mentally, physically and financially.

I’ve been drowning financially for quite some time and staying positive has gotten difficult lately due to all the burdens that come along with this situation. Also knowing that I’ll most likely have to give up my apartment (the place I’ve called home for 12 years) surely makes me feel a certain way, but sacrifices have to be made.

In the meantime I’m reaching out to all who are able to help me catch up with some things financially and give me a little bit of a cushion while I make some rearrangements in my life to better prepare for an extended stay here in Stockton, California as I care for my mother.

If you aren’t able to help, no worries and I appreciate you still because so many of you have helped me through this situation already with some great advice and encouraging words.

Things may be hard, but we all must remember, myself included, that everything happens for a reason and it will get better.
