Sustain Geez, Help Fund Detroit Startup Costs

Tax deductible
The Detroit transition
Geez  magazine is moving to Detroit ! We could not be more excited to build on the incredible work of Aiden Enns and his beautiful network. In this dire climate, it is our mission to join in the struggle for spirit and faith by offering alternative narratives and lifting up stories that are counter-cultural and resistance-inspiring. In Detroit, we plan to hit the ground running but we cannot do that without fundraising our startup costs. As always, this project is a labor of love that is supported by people who believe in the work. If you are able to donate, please do.

What is Geez?
Geez magazine is a quarterly, non-profit, ad-free, print magazine about social justice, art, and activism for people at the fringes of faith in both Canada and the US. Geez magazine has been based in Winnipeg, Canada for thirteen years. In 2019, we began transitioning the offices to Detroit with a new editorial team, led by Lydia Wylie-Kellermann, taking on leadership. This transition comes with real financial need.

Past issue themes include: wealth redistribution, masculinity and postbinary gender performance, prisons, collectivity, watershed discipleship, decolonization, apocalypse, the merits of failure, and many more.

Note: ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. We are grateful to Word & World School Inc. for serving as our fiscal agent until we have charitable nonprofit status ourselves. This relationship allows your donations to Geez magazine to be tax deductible.

Our fundraising goal
Our goal is to raise enough funding to cover the first issue led by the Detroit team. With trim wages and limited resources, one issue costs our organization $21,525. (For a breakdown of expenses, please reference the chart below.) Some of that funding—about $10,000—will come from our subscription/donor base with the transition of the magazine to Detroit. We hope to cover another $5,000 through grant writing. The final $6,525 forms the appeal we make to you. Your passion for radical contemplation and your deep generosity will make the launch of the Detroit Geez office possible!

The impact of your donation
Your donation will:
• allow us to build a home at the St. Peter’s Peace & Justice Hive surrounded by other community-driven organizations
• help us pay writers and artists a modest honorarium for their contributions
• help us pay our staff so that they can build a strong foundation for the Detroit Geez office with the goal of making the magazine sustainable over time
keep advertising and other interests out of the magazine so that the words shared are honest and uncompromised
• ensure that we can print on 100% post-consumer paper with beautiful quality that you can feel in your hands

Is this sustainable?
You may ask yourself, is this project sustainable? Part of what we’re fundraising is a budget for subscription drives—in the long term it is annual subscriptions and generous monthly donors who will sustain the health of the magazine. In the short term, we need to lean on your generosity to cover the immediate costs of office space, supplies, staff wages, printing, distribution in order to make the transition to Detroit possible. If your heart is with us and and you believe in contributing to the ongoing health of the magazine, we hope that you’ll consider becoming a monthly sustainer down the road: https://geezmagazine.org/store/donate
