Hey! Jacki and Dylan here, letting everyone know about our upcoming trip to China this summer. Before we embark our adult life (which we all know is comprised of paying bills, having responsibilities, and making decision upon decision), we want to make one decision that will impact countless lives. We are committing our summer to Xi’an, China.

Here’s a bit of background- Located in the heart of China, Xi’an was once the capital of 13 imperial dynasties, the starting point of the Silk Road, and home of the famous Terracotta Warriors. This huge metropolis is home to over 13.5 million people!

We will be participating in a language and culture exchange program with Silk Road Start and volunteering with their associated organizations in the area. We are most excited about volunteering at an orphanage that provides a home to special needs children and educational camps where orphans can receive love, encouragement, and be nurtured in a safe and fun environment. Don’t all kids deserve a chance to accomplish something? We think so, and that’s why we’re excited to teach them how to sing, play a musical instrument, perform skits, or even write and recite poems!
So... why do we want to volunteer?

I’m Jacki Bartlow. I’m 17 years old and a senior in high school. While excited for my future, making the transition from high school into college is a difficult one. How do I decide what to do with the rest of my life? And what if it is the wrong decision? So, before jumping into this next chapter, I decided to volunteer.
I have travelled in Asia with my older brother, and what I saw stunned me. Behind the five star hotels and beach resorts are entire villages living in poverty. How selfish am I to walk by and not recognize that I can and need to help? My life has been so blessed; it would seem negligent not to try to give some of those blessings back to the world.
For me, the decision was made when I read about the orphans in China. The orphans have little education and no family. The program I am volunteering with would give me the chance to share with these children the joy of family. I want to show them what it is to have love, encouragement and support. Some of these children have never been swimming, eaten ice cream, or heard “I love you.” I want to change that this summer.

I’m Dylan Rideaux. I’m 18 years old and a senior in high school. I’m going to University of Houston Downtown in the Fall, and before I start college, I’d like to make a difference somewhere in the world. I grew up as practically an only child, and realized that I’ve been given almost everything I’ve ever wanted in life.
I want to give these children that same feeling of contentment I’ve had my whole life. There are orphans out there who need someone to take care of them and I'm their guy! I would be honoured to have your support in this mission to Xi’an.

So, this June, before we start our first semester of college, we will begin our journey doing our best to make our world a better place. Thank you for considering supporting us on this life-changing journey. Any donation however big or small will be deeply appreciated. If you cannot help we completely understand, but we do ask that you would pray for us on our journey, and share our trip with your friends and family.
Thank you,
Jacki and Dylan
