My Post Degree Volunteer Trip

Donation protected
Dear Friends and Family,

After almost 7 years of working full time and going to school part time, I have finally reached the finish line. I will be graduating this June! Now many people would  (and should) pack their bags for a sunny beach vacation. Not me! As most of you know, I march to the beat of a different drum. To reward of all my hard work at school, I would much rather volunteer my time helping build a future for endangered wildlife in Borneo.

For as long as I can remember, I have always held a great love for Orangutans since I can remember. In 2004, I had the great fortune to visit an Orangutan rehabilitation center in Borneo where I witnessed the incredible work being done to save these highly endangered animals. Their deep soulful eyes and gentle mannerisms pull at my heartstrings. In that moment I decided I would to come back and donate my time and labor to help save these beautiful creatures.

It is now time for me to keep that promise. I have found an incredible program through www.thegreatprojects.com , that sends volunteers to worldwide destinations through a variety of truly unique and worthwhile projects. These projectes make a real and, sustainable difference for their causes. Ambitiously, I would like to participate in this volunteer project but I do need some help.

The Great Orangutan Project runs from June 19- July 3, 2016 at the Matang Wildlife Center in Borneo. I will focus my time to helping with :

-animal enrichment programs
-husbandry
-construction and maintenance
-organic farming

In order to participate in the program I need to cover the program fee and my flight from Toronto to Kuching, Malaysia. I am hoping to raise $5,000 CAN to help cover these costs. Once there, I will be provided with transport, foor and accomodations.

It’s been my dream to give back in this way for years. I am so grateful for any donations to help me reach my goal. I will create a social media page to document the work and to share the experience with all of you as it happens! Your donations will enable me to represent everyone that has wanted to get involved in something like this. Let me be your hands. Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.

Some statistics:

Orangutans have lost well over 80% of their habitat in the last 20 years, and an estimated one-third of the wild population died during the fires of 1997-98.  In 2016, the Orangutan Conservancy believes there are only about 45,000 orangutans remaining in Borneo and Sumatra. Shockingly, the number was: this number has dropped significantly from about 60,000 as recent as a decade ago. At this rate of loss, many experts estimate orangutans could be extinct in the wild in less than 25 years. The main threats in today to the survival of orangutans today include: loss of habitat through deforestation, palm oil plantations, illegal hunting and the illegal pet trade.
