GCC: Scholarships for DREAMer Students

Donation protected

What is the GCC AB 540 Committee?

The goal of the Glendale Community College AB 540 Committee is to make the dream of higher education possible for undocumented students in California.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our efforts to raise funds for scholarships are limited, yet, many of our students and their families are experiencing financial hardships at an alarming rate. Please consider donating towards scholarships to help undocumented students achieve academic, personal and professional excellence.

The AB 540 Support Committee has masks, get yours today! We are asking for a generous donation of $5. You can either pick up your mask or get it delivered to you with free shipping & handling. To order your masks-please make your generous donation on here and comment "Mask" in the comment section. You can complete this  Google Form  to select a delivery method.

If you would like to pick up your masks-you may pick it up at the DREAM resource center. To do so, please contact Anthony Garcia   to coordinate a date and time for pick up.

To whom it may concern,

I am a current student at Glendale community college and it saddens me to inform you all that it’s also my last semester at GCC. I’ve been attending GCC for about 8 years now. I am 25 years old and preparing to transfer. Never in my life did I picture myself in this situation. I never expected to be in college, even after graduating high school since I was at a disadvantage when it came to affording college. I was undocumented and had no social security which prevented me from getting a job. My mother had to raise 3 children by herself, and we were struggling financially to get by. That’s until former President Obama introduced Deferred Action for Child Arrival (DACA). DACA, is a program that opened up so many doors for undocumented students, encouraged me to enroll at GCC. I am privileged to be here , but I still continue to struggle financially. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone in my family is currently unemployed. We are struggling to pay rent and don’t have enough money to eat. Any help would be really appreciated.

An open Thank You letter from one of our scholarship recipients:

Dear AB540 Community Service Scholarship:

I would like to thank you immensely for the honor of being one of the student recipients of the AB 540 Community Service Scholarship. It has been a great joy and a privilege to be chosen in the past as a recipient of this very motivational scholarship.

I am currently pursuing my transfer credits to transfer to California University in Los Angeles and become a business administrator.

Students like me highly appreciate all the heart-felt encouragement and help we can get. At times, a sense of “swimming against the current” is overwhelming and the desire to quit college    seem to claim a daunting reality. Opportunities like this one and the ones I have received in the past from the V.O.I.C.E.S. Club, has renovated my hope of becoming a college graduate. The scholarship monetary award has allowed me to purchase books, class materials and/or transportation expenses.

The scholarship award invested has maintained me in college to this day, please consider it a seed planted in fertile soil that will give fruit and make a difference in my family and community.

With much gratitude and hope,

GCC Student
