In Memory of Dennis Gavaghan
The family of Markeeth Stokes for his continued support following a car accident.
This is a 3 on 3 blind draw basketball tournament that began in 1976 in the backyard of Jim and Betty Gavaghan. The Little Flower Parish on the Eastside of Indianapolis played host to the starting years of this event. The participants of this tournament were from many different areas and schools in the surrounding area, with most of them being from Scecina Memorial High School.
As the years went by, the tournament moved from my parent’s house to a friend’s backyard, Lee and Marydel Moran. The tournament remained at the Moran backyard for the next 15 years and saw many different changes and growth. In 1985 a friend and participant, Marty Brennan, was diagnosed with cancer. Marty eventually passed and five years following his death, the Classic became a small fundraiser in Marty’s name with donations given to Scecina. The Classic became a consistent fundraiser and continued to grow each year.
In 1997, the tournament moved again, this time to my new in home in Holy Spirit Parish. The Classic
continues its tradition and fundraising base to this day. Each year, the tournament is a community and
family based day with kids and adults. Following the 3 on 3 tournament, are kids games and activities.
This year’s tournament marks the 46th year and will have at least 60 players, hosted on July 16th.
