Gavin's Medical Fund

Hi my name is Joshua Moody father of Gavin Moody (that little guy pictured above). Today I'm reaching out for help, for my son. For those that know me personally, know that this is one of the hardest things for me to do...ask for help.  We feel we have been blessed with the life we've been given, both the good and the bad have helped us grow as a family. However when it comes to our child my wife and l will do anything we can to make his life that much more comfortable. Since we are without any insurance coverage at all, we ask kindly for your help.

Gavin just recently turned 7 on the 29th of August, 3 days later he would be diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes (Diabetes Type 1). We suspected the changes when he became really thirsty all the time, and was unable to hold his urine for more then 30-45 minutes at a time. The big trigger point was him wetting the bed nearly every night for 5 nights in a row. After a quick doctors appointment my wife called me at work and told me to come in as some of the tests came back showing bad results. Once the urinalysis came back with high sugars, they ran a glucose check. The readings were so high the monitor was unable to read it (Meaning well over 600, normal range is 70-120). They were shocked as he stood there unphased to his high glucose levels, no other symptoms to him other then being thirsty.

We took an hour long trip to Warsaw, IN to KCH the local hospital there where they hooked him up to IV's to hydrate him and get his sugar back down. From there they ran more tests on his blood and urine to make sure there hadn't been any permanent damage from unchecked Diabetes. Thankfully all came back clean other then his sugar levels. We caught it in enough time to prevent any added damage. From there he was transfered roughly 90 minutes away to Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center's Pediatrics Center where he is currently. He will be staying here for several days to not only to bring his sugar levels back down to a normal level, but to educate us all on how to now live with Diabetes, and what this means for the future.

While this condition is incurable right now it is mostly manageable with medications. Gavin will have to receive Insulin shots every day for the rest of his life (anytime he eats/drinks or checks his sugar and its high) and multiple times have to take his blood glucose levels by pricking his finger and testing the blood.(10-15 times a day). If anyone has a child they know they aren't big fans of needles...as an adult I can also concur...

Due to the recent economic changes these hard times hit our family without medical coverage (No insurance coverage at all) leaving us to try and figure out how to provide for his medication as well as the equipment he would need such as the Insulin pump (recommended for children with the disease so they don't have to have shots all day). Unfortunately due to my higher income (even with my wife being a stay at home mommy) we are unable to apply for Medicaid or any government assistance at this time. We are still trying to work with the drug companies to see what we can do to keep the price of his insulin down.

The funds we are asking for above we don't expect to cover all of the expenses but it will help cover some and the cost of at least his first insulin pump (range in the cost of $4500-$6500) These devices generally have to be changed over a couple years as well. In the event the proceeds surpass our cost of current medical expenses and needs the remainder will be used to continue his care and a donation will be made to a prominent charity in order to help provide for a cure.

We've had immense moral suppport from our family and friends and continue to have it as well. We hope at the very least to spread word on this condition so we can help these kids find a cure, so they can be kids again. So we urge you to share this message to whoever you can even if you can't donate.

Thank you for your time :)
