Hi, the Gary White Planning Committee was created to honor Gary White who passed away in 2020, by creating the Gary White Student Athlete Scholarship Award (GWSASA) and the Gary White 3 on 3 Celebration Basketball Tournament.
Gary White was a pillar of the Hoboken community serving as a coach and referee in youth sports for many years. He is credited with creating Hoboken’s first basketball summer league that provided a positive influence and a safe haven for our teens. He was also the President of the Hoboken School Employees' Association and the Hoboken district Head Custodian. Born and raised in Hoboken, he embodied the mantra, "Once a Redwing, Always a Redwing!" A man of deep faith and a true gentleman, it is in his honor that we memorialize Gary White, by creating the Gary White Student Athlete Scholarship Award (GWSASA) and the Gary White 3 on 3 Celebration Basketball Tournament.
The GWSASA will be awarded to Hoboken high school senior student athletes. The recipients will embody leadership on and off the field, team spirit, good academic standards, community involvement and most of all will be an example of Once a Redwing, Always a Redwing!” Each recipient will receive upon graduation a scholarship to support both their academic and athletic endeavors in college.
The Gary White basketball tournament will support Gary’s love of coaching and refereeing basketball for middle school and high school students. Both girls and boys can participate in the tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday June 19 from 9a – 6p at the Gary White basketball courts (Church Square Park). We plan to provide food and drinks to both the basketball players and community residents.
Last year, the Gary White Scholarship provided two Hoboken graduating seniors with $500 each.
