Gary Speed Walk III - Over 120 miles - Newcastle to Leeds
Why?
Gary Speed's death had an impact on all Leeds fans and probably all men who had even the vaguest idea who Gary was. A rich, successful, handsome bloke with a family and a great job. If mental heath can be an issue for someone as brilliant as that then it's an issue for all of us.
Back in 2022 we walked 92 miles from Gary's childhood home in North Wales back to Leeds. 30 years on, it was a fitting tribute to Gary's part in out 1992 title win and a positive way to mark the 10th year of Gary's death. The year after, Goodison Park was our starting point. Home of the team he grew up supporting and his next destination after Leeds United. As luck (and some route adjustments) would have it, that was also 92 miles.
What's happening this time?
After a year's break, we are back! Gary's next club, Newcastle, is the starting point and I'm afraid there's no way to make this one 92 miles. One thing that hasn't changed are the glamorous hotel locations, certainly on the first two nights. Durham Services and Scotch Corner are followed by the more picturesque stays in Thirsk and Harrogate. All in all, we will be covering over 120 miles.
The walk will begin on June 9th and Finish on Friday the 13th (it will be fine, probably). There are 73 people taking part. Unfortunately, due to hotel capacity we've been unable to invite any new walkers. Though if you would like to join is on the final day form Harrogate there will be more details closer to the time.
Where is the money going?
ANDYSMANCLUB takes its name from Andrew Roberts, a man who sadly took his own life aged 23 in early 2016. Andy’s family had no inkling that he was suffering or struggling to the extent that he would do this, and as a result looked deeper into male suicide and men’s mental health. They soon discovered that male suicide is the biggest killer of men under 54, with male mental health surrounded by well-ingrained cultural stigma in the UK.
Andy's Man Club are a grassroots charity that has remained true to it's humble roots in Halifax. Unlike some charities, nobody there is taking a big salary out of the organisation and the groups themselves are all volunteer-led. They're in the heart of local communities and it's always free to attend. You can find your local group here .
