Thousands of poor families, many of them led by women, have resettled in the Jaffna peninsula after the 30-year war in Sri Lanka. They have been facing acute food shortages due to the COVID-19 epidemic. One unexpected but positive outcome out of this has been a heightened interest in home gardening. This is in perfect alignment with the "Garden for Every Home" campaign our organisation has been promoting for the past 3 years.
What is a "Grow Bag"?
Grow Bags are packed with soil, compost and other ingredients which form a favourable medium for plant growth. A plant is allowed to establish in the Growbag before the bag is delivered to the household. Grow Bags can sit anywhere where there is space and sunlight. A garden can be added to a home instantly which is the beauty of this system.
About our Model Farm
Our model Farm in Jaffna, Sri Lanka has been in operation since early 2016. This integrated organic farm is a pioneering effort to promote water saving and organic farming in the North and East of Sri Lanka. So far, this project has been funded by private individuals. Sri Lankan local government has awarded first prize to this farm by choosing it as the best organic farm in the Jaffna District.

With the help of many donors, thousands of Grow Bags have already been produced and distributed to disadvantaged families who resettled after the war. We have already helped 150 families with 4500 Grow Bags. Each household was delivered 30 Grow Bags produced at our Model Farm, with a choice of crops eg.: Chillies, Tomatoes, Egg Plant, Beans and Salad Leaves.

(This will cover the supply of 30 Growbags, necessary organic pesticides and growth promoters, a packet of Vermicompost and the cost of site visits).
