Garage to Home for New Neighbors
Donation protected

We'd love to turn our garage into a home for:
Young adults aging out of foster care
AND/OR
Refugee/Asylee neighbors that need temporary space to land as they settle.
Long story long:
Hey, world.
I’m Seth. I live this house with the family I’ve been lucky enough to have right now. It’s me, my partner, Lacey, and our 4 current kids. Some adopted, some in foster care, one figuring out what it might mean to move out on their own one day. We have a solid crew. (Oh! and one time Lacey bought us a small dog when I was gone for a week, so he also lives here much to my three-year-long dismay.)
This house is our family’s house because of generous gracious gifts that we didn’t deserve, because the payments worked with what we got paid without having to save a lot, and because Lace and I both grew up in relative privilege with families that were able to meet our needs and send us off on our way to college and student loans. We are really quite average people with average money in this average house that is full of people and anxiety and hard stories, and also lots of hope and love.
We’ve had lives that have been really lucky and almost every moment of our current life is surrounded by people that have known such little luck. And mostly, the people we find ourselves amongst have all been significantly displaced - which for a couple of people that have never been displaced, this is such a honored space we consider ourselves to hold.
We have this idea (that we've learned from wise, faithful people around us) that what we have isn’t just for us to keep climbing any ladder of success. What we have is for giving away, and we are in a spot where we would love to figure out how to keep doing that and invite the rest of you along on the journey.
Detached from our house is a two car garage. It’s currently full of:
Items for families new to our country and other foster families
And a bunch of junk (like, so much junk)!
Our hope is that we would be able to turn it into a space for other people to call home, even temporarily.
Here’s what we want to use it for:
Foster youth aging out of or that have already aged out of the foster system and/or
Refugee and asylum seeking neighbors that have found home in our community, but not an actual house to live in while they figure out the complexities of life in this country.
We’d love for a garage to become a home.
But making even a two-bedroom apartment into a small home for folks is expensive. Sometimes creating and living a different story than we currently are costs money. Culturally, we don't talk about money that often, unless we're judging people based on how they spend theirs or didn't work hard enough to get what they think they should have achieved.
So we'll be super upfront:
We want this home to a gift from our whole community (even if we don't know you yet).
We want to use our energy to care well for people, so instead of trying to turn this garage into an ADU ourselves, we'd like to pay someone to do this, and to do it well.
The team we'll hire to do this will be a team that is reputable and that we TRUST.
If you want to give to this and have any question as to how money will be spent, we'll show you the literal receipts if you'd like! A doc will be created that we can share with you so that you see how the money from our community is making a change.
We literally can't do this unless the larger community gives, and ALL money given will go toward materials, labor, and furnishing this space.
The way you share resources - no matter how much - really, really matters.
If you choose to give, we believe you'll be a part of shaping our story, and the stories of those that will call this garage a home in the years to come.
Thanks for considering! I think you're great, and I'm glad you're alive.
P.S.
We know that trying to raise 150k seems bonkers.
We're still doing it anyway.
