Gandami Rural Clinic & Maternity Ward Project

We, the Hwirisha Community Development Trust, are raising funds to support, renovate, & equip Gandami Rural Clinic, a health centre that serves hundreds of families in the Wiltshire small-scale farming area in Chivhu, Zimbabwe. Gandami Rural Clinic is the only clinic in the entire Wiltshire area covering a community of over 500 small-scale farms with thousands of residents.

The pictures below show the current status. We aim to raise £8,500 and provide the following:
• Acceptable maternity standards including beds, blankets, and basic equipment
• Toilet facilities for both pregnant mothers and other patients
• Sufficient clean water and water storage facilities
• Linen and bedding for the clinic

We thank you sincerely for your kind support. No donation is small, every little support helps us to reach our goal.

, established in May 2020, we have already managed to raise over USD $2 200.00 that we used to buy COVID-19 protective personal equipment for Gandami Rural Clinic (surgical masks, goggles, gloves, aprons, shoe covers, hairnets, hand sanitizers, infra-red thermometers, and essential medicines), which were delivered to the clinic on 16 May 2020.

Thank you,
Hwirisha Community Development Trust - Ziva Kwawakabva

Gandami Rural Clinic patients including expecting mothers and the very sick often travel by foot or cattle driven carts from distances as far as 20km away. Due to harsh economic situation in Zimbabwe, the authorities have  continuously struggled to provide basic facilities to enable delivery of basic care.

Basic health care is badly needed in Wiltshire and your support and donations are greatly appreciated.  Most common illnesses treated at the 4-bed Gandami rural clinic  include Malaria, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS-related illnesses, pneumonia and meningitis. Children are often treated for  diarrhea and malnutrition. Unfortunately, in most cases the clinic fails to treat patients due to lack of medicines or basic equipment.

Access to sufficient clean water is a continuous challenge for Gandami clinic. A borehole operated by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) is currently broken down, leaving the clinic solely dependent on a currently dry, seasonal unprotected well. The clinic urgently needs to have sufficient clean water and water storage facilities.

Wash Hand Basin with no clean water connection. There is no running water supply for Gandami rural clinic.

Gandami rural clinic has no sterilization facility, they use an open fire to sterilize equipment. Please help get sterilization equipment for the clinic. Currently, the clinic has no electricity supply and relies on candlelight and sometimes using the light of cell phones.

Gandami rural clinic maternity ward has two very basic metal beds not suitable for a maternity ward. The ward lacks the most of basic the of facilities you would expect of such vital facility. There is no electricity, no shower or toilet. Mothers have to fetch water from the unprotected well and use a small metal dish to clean themselves.

An overflowing pit latrine, toilet at Gandami clinic. Currently Gandami Clininc has does not have properly functioning toilets. The clinic relies on two old pit latrine toilets that are now full and  overflowing and pose a serious health hazard to both the staff and patients.

On 16 May 2020, we, Hwirisha Community Development Trust, handed over COVID-19 protective personal equipment worth over USD $2 200.00 to Gandami Rural Clinic (surgical masks, goggles, gloves, aprons, shoe covers, hairnets, hand sanitizers, infra-red thermometers, and essential medicines). Zimbabwe's deputy minister of health, Dr JC Mangwiro (on the right) received the donations.
