Hi, my name is Gail; I am the very blessed sister of Andrew Campbell, who is currently waiting for a double lung transplant. This is a story I could not script, so please bear with me. About four years ago, our beautiful mother died from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). In November, Andrew became very ill, having to go to hospital and returned home on oxygen after finding he too had IPF and had probably had it for a couple of years already. He did well at home for the first couple of months, but the last few have been very difficult; he has become quite ill, needing a tremendous amount of oxygen, but he has also been barely able to complete his daily personal care. He is currently at the top of the transplant list.
About a month ago, Andrew's wife became very ill, testing positive for COVID and then had a heart attack. She has been in hospital and will need to have a feeding tube as she is too weak to swallow well. She weighed 78 pounds after getting out of the ICU.
Andrew's mother-in-law became ill about ten days ago. So she has been in hospital since then, with a compression fracture in her back. Hopefully, she will be going home next week.
Currently, their 17-year-old son and their 14-year-old autistic son are at home, and both need some heavy love and care at present. The autistic son may need a helper occasionally hired to help give the family members a bit of a respite time.
Their home needs some love and attention as well, as Andrew did not realize how sick he was and has been unable to do much over the last couple of years. He just thought he was tired and a bit depressed, not realizing he was being affected by a vicious lung disease. His wife has had chronic medical problems for years, and her mom has the start of dementia. Andrew had been the caregiver for the whole family.
Funding would help with the everyday costs of running a home while no one can work. Andrew has not been able to work since November 2021. Funding would help in the care of the children and make the home a healthy place for all to return to when discharged from the hospital.
Today the pulmonologist told my brother he needed a lung transplant soon as he would not be alive in 6 months due to the severity of the disease. So we pray for my brother and the potential donor. I am taking at least 3 months' leave to help take care of the family.
Thank you for your assistance. It means so much!
