Hello!
Between 2003 and 2005, I lived in the town of Nebaj for a total of 10 months. During this time, I volunteered with what was then the Grupo de Mujeres Por La Paz. At the time, it was a collective of about 30 women who operated a cooperative garden and retail store where they sold weavings and gave weaving instruction.
Now, the group has expanded its mission and membersihp to include men. Check out the group's mission and history on their google home page.
The group’s current projects include a weaving cooperative, a community museum, a medicinal plant garden, collaborative efforts to document Ixil language and culture, and computer classes for Nebaj’s youth.
Members have personally experienced the desperation of the community’s youth and hope that providing training in computation skills will better prepare the town’s young people to pursue more advanced jobs that can then support their continued education. To this end, the Grupos have established a scholarship program to provide support for their youth in the pursuit of their education.
My goal is to raise $2000 for the group by Dec 1st. I'll be flying down on Dec 15th and staying in Nebaj for a week. My plan is to withdraw cash there from an ATM. This worked well ten years ago, and should be even easier now! I will cover all fees associated with currency exchange and foreign ATM withdrawals, as well as the 7.9% fee from GoFundMe, up to $300.

You can also donate cryptocurrency (BTC and Stellars accepted) to the Stellar wallet named bekkijean (that's my personal wallet and I'll donate the whole value, including all stellars and BTC I have in there now). These donations will be treated separately from the $2k goal here on GoFundMe. I will withdraw BTC and make a corresponding cash USD donation; for STR, I will not withdraw, but will make corresponding cash USD donation. In each case, the exchange rate will be determined at time of withdrawal (~Dec 15th, 2014).
