This is Verl from Utah's story…
"In November, our family changed forever when my father passed away. He was with my grandfather every day, helping care for my grandmother as she lives with dementia. Because of him, they were able to stay in the home they built together. He helped with meals, chores, and the quiet, everyday moments that made life manageable.
When we lost my dad, my grandfather did not just lose his son. He lost his partner in caregiving and the person who helped carry the weight of each day. Now, at 88 years old, he carries that weight alone.
Each morning, he wakes up and cares for the woman he loves as her memory fades. He does this while grieving the loss of his child. There are no breaks and no one there to step in when he is exhausted. Still, he shows up every single day.
I help as much as I can, but I live far away and have a young child. I visit when I can, but it cannot replace the daily support my dad once gave. The truth is, my grandfather is doing something no one should have to do alone, without the means to afford in-home care or extra support.
What stands out most is that even now, he still checks on me and makes sure I am okay. That is who he has always been. He has spent his life showing up for others, and now he is carrying more than anyone should have to, on his own."
