This is Ronald from Vermont’s story…

"I work at a nonprofit in Central Vermont. My role is to assess and support people who enter our hotel voucher program. That is how I met Ronnie. Hearing his story stopped me in my tracks.

After his wife passed away, he let people stay in his home with him because they had nowhere to go. Over time, they took advantage of his kindness. They refused to leave and brought others in. Soon, Ronnie was pushed out of his own home and became homeless.

For years, Ronnie has spent thousands each month on a run-down motel just to have a place to sleep, this doesn’t include the $10,000 he had to spend to get his car up and running for him to get to doctors’ appointments. During that time, his home was heavily damaged. There is trash throughout the property, including the garage and pool. Extra campers were added for more people to live there. A rat infestation has spread through the home, destroying appliances, walls, and floors.

Ronnie was finally able to regain access to his home on March 1. When he tried to stay there, it was not safe. The house is unlivable, especially for an elderly Veteran with health issues. He is also battling a serious blood infection, which makes his situation even more urgent.

All of this has left Ronnie feeling discouraged and unsure if he will ever return home. He served his country and worked hard his whole life. Now he is facing another fight just to have a safe place to live. Because he owns his home, help has been limited. This fundraiser can give him a real chance to rebuild and go home again."
