This is Luke from Rhode Island’s story…
"I nominated my amazing husband, Lucas. He served 9 and a half years in the Navy before being medically discharged due to knee injuries. He has had multiple surgeries on both knees for torn meniscus and lives with daily pain. He will likely need another surgery in the future.
We have four children together. Two of them we call our 'extra spicy' children, as they have Autism. In 2023, we were asked to take in two family members. Without hesitation, Lucas said yes. That brought our family to six children. He is not only a loving husband but also a caring uncle who puts family first.
Since our family grew, I have had to reduce my work hours due to health issues for myself and one of our children. Lucas has taken on even more responsibility. He works as a teacher, supports his students, and continues his own schooling. Many nights, he only gets a few hours of sleep.
Anyone who knows Lucas will tell you he gives freely and helps others without expecting anything back. He works hard to provide for us, but like many families, we live paycheck to paycheck. We have not been able to save for needed home repairs, and this has been heavy on him.
Right now, we need to repair our front stairs, chimney, septic system, and oil system. I want to ease some of this burden for Lucas. He has done so much for our family, and I hope we can come together to support him."
