This is Gary from Washington’s story…

"Gary Crawford, my father, was born in 1950 and joined the Navy in 1969. He served during the Vietnam War. After meeting my mother, they had three children, and when they divorced, he took all of us and raised us on his own. He also helped raise another child from his new wife’s family, caring for four kids in total.

He worked long hours at the Pope and Talbot lumber mill in Port Gamble, Washington. He often took overtime to make sure we had what we needed. Because of him, we had Christmas gifts, family vacations, school supplies, and full plates at the table. We always felt cared for.

Gary is the kind of person who never turns people away. He would give you the shirt off his back and his last twenty dollars if you needed it. Today, he is retired and living on a small income. He has also been battling prostate cancer, and some days are very hard for him.

Recently, his home, which belonged to his mother, was destroyed by a drunk driver. The house was condemned and lost power. He has been left without safe living conditions, and there is no insurance coverage. He now faces the cost of clearing the property, rebuilding, and finding a place to stay.

Gary has spent his life giving to others, his family, his community, and his country. He deserves support during this time. He is tired, but still the same generous man he has always been. Thank you for taking the time to read his story and for any help you can give."
