Help Liz get to Nicaragua

Ever since I can remember I've always wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but it wasn't until my mom got sick that I decided I wanted to become a nurse.

For those of you who don't know, when I was 10 years old my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer.  Although she was only given a year to live, my amazing mother was able to fight this awful disease for over 3 years before finally passing away. Throughout her battle, my mother endured the removal of her stomach, a fractured femur (due to the cancer metastasizing to her bones), and constant symptoms from her chemo - but one thing she never should have had to endure was bad nurses.  As I was often by her side during her frequent hospital visits, I was able to witness first hand how my mom's nurses could make or break her hospital stay. I remember how sometimes nurses would act rudely towards her after a long day, and my mom would just cry out of frustration and pain. Alternatively, I also remember how some nurses could truly make her day. I specifically remember one nurse who during my mother's last few days, would sing the song amazing grace to her everyday while holding her hand. I can only aspire to be someone as compassionate as that nurse was, and ever since that moment I've known I wanted to be a nurse.

Almost 6 years later, I am now a sophomore at Mizzou pursuing my Nursing degree.  While preparing my resume in order to apply for nursing school, I have been given the amazing opportunity to travel to Managua, Nicarauga this winter through the Global MedicalTraining (GMT) organization.  GMT is an International Humanitarian Organization which students provide free medical services to poor communities in Central American Countries (for more information, check out their website http://www.gmtonline.org).  While in Nicaragua, I will be participating in several medical clinics and house visits where I will be working to diagnose and perscribe medicine to Nicaraguans and their families. This experience will not only give me the oppurtunity to expand my understanding of medicine outside of the United States, but will also give me the chance to improve the condition and well-being of this third world community.

In order to be able to participate in this amazing opportunity, I need to raise $2,400. This money goes towards medical supplies, hotel fees, travel costs, and meals while on the trip. Donations can be made online through this page I've created or by checks ( write them out in my name) which can be sent to my address, #1-102, 2900 Old 63 South, Columbia, MO, 65201.  Not only would your donation be helping me, but in turn it would be helping countless others to get the medical attention they need.  Any amount is appreciated, and I will be eternally grateful for your support.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me at [phone redacted], or email me at [email redacted]souri.edu.
