Uplift a Warrior: Ashley Yates

Donation protected
Ashley is a revolutionary organizer, writer and community advocate who got her start in St Louis, Missouri and is now based in Oakland, CA. She was at the center of the Ferguson protests after the police killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown and continues to organize around issues of police brutality and institutional racism.  She has been active in both on the ground protests and strategic organizing central to the Movement for Black Lives, Ferguson Action, and Black Lives Matter.

Ashley has been working tirelessly for Black liberation for many years, both in the public eye and in close knit organizing spaces. She met with President Obama at the White House in November of 2014 after the officer who murdered Micheal Brown failed to be indicted by a grand jury.  She was among the protesters who made headlines by interrupting presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley at Netroots Nation in 2015.  In 2016 she was invited  by the Brazilian government  to attend their first state conference on racism and anti-Blackness. She has been a contributor to Huffpost and has appeared on CNN and Democracy Now

Despite accolades that match those of mainstream political icons, Ashley stays on the ground connected to movements in the streets. She has never stopped organizing, protesting, marching, and staying close to where marginilized folks need her presence most. She gives freely and makes free appearances. Her magnetic speaking presence and powerful chants have inspired countless marches and actions. Ashley goes where she is needed.

And she is struggling with basic survival needs. Ashely needs to establish secure housing and get herself back on her feet so she can continue to be the freedom fighter we need her to be.

Why are our most valuable leaders struggling so much to meet their basic survival needs? Ashely is my friend, but I also see her tremendous value and worth to our communities. There is no place on earth that is not suffering from the long reaches of colonialism and white supremacy. A lifetime spent fighting for Black liberation is a lifetime spent fighting for us all.  Whether or not there are paychecks for the type of work that Ashley is doing, she is doing THE ONLY REAL WORK THERE IS. Can we band together as a community to see that one of our most important warriors has her basic living needs met? I believe we can and we will!

Many thanks and blessings to all who donate and share.
