Support and Protect Asian Elders
Donation protected
Background
We’re in the middle of Lunar New Year—a time meant for joy and celebration. Instead, innocent Asian elders are being assaulted across the country. Our parents and grandparents are scared to leave home.
Anti-Asian violence has increased by 1,900% in the U.S. since the pandemic started. Recently, the violence has disproportionately targeted the elderly. It’s horrifying. It’s heartbreaking. And I’m MAD AS HELL about it.
In memory of my grandparents, Ah Po, Hong Di Zeng, and Ah Gung, Kwok Fun Liu, I’m hosting a fundraiser to support and show love to Asian American elders at a time when anti-Asian violence is hurting our most vulnerable communities. Nationwide, more than half of Asian elders live alone, and Asian American seniors are the second-highest population living below poverty.
Details
100% of all donations will be given to Heart of Dinner, a 501(c)(3) organization based in New York City founded at the onset of COVID-19 to fight food insecurity and isolation experienced by Asian American seniors—two issues heightened by the pandemic. The organization delivers care packages of hot lunches and fresh produce every Wednesday, paired with a handwritten and illustrated letter. These packages not only provide comfort for Asian seniors who are worried about leaving home for groceries, but they also support local businesses.
I’ll be matching every donation at 3x, up to $1,000. If we reach the goal of $1,000, I’ll match with $3,000, and Heart of Dinner will receive a total of $4,000.
Each care package costs Heart of Dinner $20 to assemble. The $4,000 contribution would provide 200 care packages ($20 each) that include a hot meal by a restaurant partner, fresh culturally appropriate veggies, and other groceries that can last elders 2-3 days (3 meals a day). Heart of Dinner has gotten calls from gong gongs and po pos (grandpas and grandmas) sharing that their care packages sometimes even last 4-5 days.

Stay tuned for receipts posted on my Instagram and Twitter (@jeliao) after the fundraiser ends.

Jenny
