Fundraiser to help build a new school in Vanuatu

Hi, I’m Michaela and I’m a fourth year architecture student at University College Dublin. This summer I will be joining CAUKIN Studio to design and build a classroom and library space for Tanbok Primary School on Pentecost Island, Vanuatu.

CAUKIN Studio is a design and build organisation that brings teams of international participants to work on socially, economically and environmentally impactful projects around the world. They work alongside the community in which they are building, exchanging skills and knowledge in the process. Over the past seven years, they have completed a number of community buildings across the globe.

The scheme is in partnership with the Tanbok project, who work to support the Island of Pentecost following Cyclone Pam in 2015 and Cyclone Harold in 2020. These cyclones are considered to be some of the most intense tropical cyclones ever seen in the South Pacific Ocean and are regarded among the worst natural disasters in the history of Vanuatu.

Following the 2015 cyclone, the school in Tanbok village was completely destroyed. Over the past couple of years, the community have been able to construct a number of new classrooms and a teachers office, but class groups are still being taught in temporary shelters constructed from old iron roofing, without windows, light or ventilation.

In August 2023, I will be volunteering for four weeks alongside other participants, the team from CAUKIN Studio and the Tanbok Village community to design and build the new classrooms and library space, creating a safe place for the local children and community to learn in.

I hope to raise money to fund some of the project costs. If you would like to support the project any donation, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.
