Fundraiser for Nafisa

Meet Nafisa, a refugee from Afghanistan and a single mother of eight children. Nafisa's story is a heartbreaking one. She lost her father to the Taliban and was forced into an arranged marriage with a much older man who already had eight children of his own.

Nafisa was forced to have children with her husband who threatened her life and the lives of her family if she did not oblige. She lived in constant fear until the Taliban came again, and she had to flee the country with her eight children, including her 8-month-old baby.

At the airport, she and five of her children made it through the gate, but her three daughters were left behind. She begged the guards to let them through, but they refused, promising to bring them later. However, they never did. She had to leave her girls behind, and for the last 1.5 years, she has been living with her five children in a small two-bedroom apartment in Sacramento. Despite the difficult situation, Nafisa is eager to learn English, start training for a job, and provide for her children and family. Also, like any mother, she is determined to get her daughters back from Afghanistan and with the rest of her family.

Her rent is $1500 per month, and she receives $1500 in monthly income and $1100 in food stamps. The $1500 goes to rent, leaving nothing for utilities and other expenses. Currently, it's difficult for Nafisa to work since she has a two-year-old at home and has to take and pick up her five-year-old and 14-year-old from school.

Her hope is to get through the next year until her daughters come and can help take care of the smaller kids while she gets a job. That's where we come in!

We are a group of individuals in Sacramento that wanted to help a refugee family in crisis. We reached out to a local non-profit and asked if there was any family in great need. They pointed us to Nafisa. We met with her and realized getting funds to get her through the next year is her greatest need. Therefore, we decided a gofundme was the best way to help her with her expenses for the next year. Our goal is to raise at least $18,000. Any amount, big or small, is greatly appreciated.
