Fundraiser for Homes First Society
Homelessness and housing insecurity continue to be a major issue in the City of Toronto. Thousands of people live on the streets and tens of thousands lack reliable shelter. Without a home, people are unable to live their best lives. Homeless people experience significant risks to their health and wellbeing and these issues are exacerbated during the winter. Without adequate social services, homeless people are often trapped in a life of poverty, malnourishment and mental health issues.
Homes First Society (HFS) provides support to those in greatest need. It serves over 2,000 people on any given night across a network of 9 shelters and 15 supportive housing sites. Each resident receives support from a case worker in reaching their individual housing goals. Through HFS's staff and its partnership network, residents are supported across a wide range of needs to build skills and tools to gradually improve their lives with the goal of securing improved housing.
I have been volunteering on HFS's Board of Directors for several years. I am extremely proud of the work that has been done, especially during a challenging pandemic period, and the commitment of the staff to this cause. HFS staff work incredibly hard and this has been reflected in the organization's ability in recent years to scale up to meet the growing need for shelter and supportive housing services. While I hope that one day the need for shelter and supportive housing diminishes, I am cognizant of growing economic pressures and housing insecurity in Toronto. There is also a growing need to provide support for newly landed refugees. It is very unfortunate that some people will not have a home. Some of these people will have children and aging parents to care for. I hope that they will find the support they need and hope that, if they need it, they can lean on an organization like HFS.
I would be truly grateful for any support you can provide. Funds raised will go directly towards HFS. Thanks in advance for your contribution.
