I recently had the privilege of meeting Eva, an inspiring individual in her eighties, through the Friendly Visitor program facilitated by SAGE – a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ elders. Eva is a survivor of a time when she had to conceal her true self due to societal norms. This has left her navigating her later years without the support system many of us are fortunate to have.

Eva is not only facing physical challenges that come with aging, but is also grappling with emotional and financial difficulties. As a volunteer in SAGE’s Friendly Visitor program, I have witnessed her resilience and, sadly, the isolation she endures. To enhance the quality of her life and well-being, I have received permission from SAGE to initiate a fundraising campaign with a specific goal in mind – to provide a deep cleaning and pest control service for her apartment. Eva has been denied the healthcare she greatly needs by other outside organizations because home aides do not feel comfortable entering her space. SAGE had considered going through New York City’s Human Resources Administration (HRA), which does cover one-time cleaning expenses like this, but this process can take over two months and we know how much Eva needs this support as soon as possible!

Additionally, our aim is to create a safe and comfortable living environment for Eva, where she can find solace in her own space without the burden of physical discomfort or the distress of unwelcome pests. This project is not just about cleaning a home; it's about affirming the value of a cherished member of our community and offering her the support she needs in her golden years.

Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will make a significant impact on Eva's life and show her that she is not alone.

Here is a little more about Eva: She was born and raised in New York City. She loves watching Pixar movies like Toy Story and Monsters Inc., as they help her cope with her current predicament. She is a huge Cate Blanchett fan and has a pet finch that sings to her every day.
