Fundraiser for Cedric

After months of negotiations with SF's largest landlord, Cedric Dugger -- a 70-year-old senior, member of the Veritas Tenants Association (VTA), and long-time San Franciscan -- secured an agreement to stay in his home of 10+ years in the Tenderloin and be free of pandemic rent debt that was no fault of his own. Now, to help him stay on his feet, Mr. Dugger's community of support is raising money to help him over the next twelve months.

With support from Legal Assistance to the Elderly, Supervisor Dean Preston, Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco, and his tenant union, Mr. Dugger went through a long fight to keep his home. He withstood Veritas' first offer in the summer of 2022 to simply vacate in a couple of months with no debt relief. Negotiations continued through the remainder of 2022.

Meanwhile, Mr. Dugger did his best to maintain his health, restore a source of income, and stay strong. The pressure of an eviction lawsuit is uniquely intense and distressing. Mr. Dugger stayed in touch with his fellow VTA members and came out to events.

In 2023, Mr. Dugger and his legal team came up with a creative proposal to waive the debt and motivate Veritas to contribute to the resolution of Mr. Dugger's case. San Francisco's local rent-relief program stepped up with tremendous coverage for the rent debt, and Veritas agreed to waive a significant portion of Mr. Dugger's prospective rent payments.

To better allow Mr. Dugger to focus his resources on his health, LAE, HRCSF, and the VTA are raising funds to help Mr. Dugger with his future housing costs. Please contribute to this fund to enable Mr. Dugger to continue living in the place he's called home for 13 years.
