Support for a Community Hero to Pursue his Dream

Donation protected
For years, Chef Erik Tannehill has been giving back to the Michigan City community as the Soup Kitchen Coordinator at St. Paul Lutheran Church. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, he launched the Emergency Soup Kitchen. With a handful of volunteers, Erik coordinates the soup kitchen 6 days a week and serves hundreds of people weekly at First Methodist Church with the support of First Presbyterian Church. They also provide meals for a local women and children’s shelter and homebound residents.

According to the nonprofit, Feeding America, 2020 food insecurity rates for Indiana are projected to be 5% higher than 2018’s average rate. No one should have to worry about where their next meal comes from, but this is the reality for far too many. Chef Erik is trying to change this.

Being a chef is not simply a job to Erik, it is a labor of love.

Before the onset of COVID-19, Erik was in the process of starting his unique job training program, "Cook with Confidence, Dine with Dignity".  For those who might otherwise be overlooked in the interview process, Erik extends a hand up to low-income people who want to pursue their dreams. Offered through his Melt Kitchen Restaurant in LaPorte, this program provides a comprehensive apprenticeship to acquire the culinary and business skills necessary to run a successful restaurant. Not only is Erik feeding the hungry, he is also feeding the hopes and spirits of his fellow community members, while at the same time helping to break the cycle of poverty.

Even heroes need a helping hand. As the full-time Coordinator of the Emergency Soup Kitchen and the owner and manager of Melt Kitchen, Chef Erik is struggling financially to keep his own dream afloat during these difficult times.

Please join me in donating to Community Hero, Chef Erik Tannehill. By donating today, you are standing with Erik to confront the injustice of food insecurity and homelessness and to make our communities a better place to live and thrive.

Thank you for your support!
