Food poverty is a scarily prevalent issue in the country and even more so now with the current pandemic. Since coronavirus started to sweep the UK, we have taken the role of supporting our community through our food provision services.
Our small team of staff members, and community volunteers we have risked our lives to provide essential food aid for those most in need in the community. From those that have experienced a dramatic drop in income to the elderly who cannot leave their house - we have helped everyone we could.
We have provided a community food hub in both Prestonpans and Tranent which reaches to those in the surrounding areas. This food hub is for all individuals to collect essential packages of food, toiletries and household products, and is also a base for which our delivery service runs. Deliveries are provided to those shielding, isolating or unable to reach the pantry.
In the 6 months of coronavirus lockdown our food hubs provided over 40,000 food packages made of hot cooked meals, fruit and vegetables, food essentials such as tins, bread and milk as well as pet food, toiletries and household goods. Our food is adequately nourishing and made on site by trained chefs and nutritionists.
From this emergency food provision we have adapted to meet the growing needs of the community - introducing new programmes such as Meals on Wheels, Befriending, Youth Clubs, Online Family and Nutrition Support and Volunteering. This has been vital for many, and recent evaluations saw 95% of respondents stating that they felt that someone cared for them as well as many reporting the Pennypit staff are often the only people they see each day.
