Fund the Treffpunkt

That idea of a community center in Arizona turned into a dream: unite and inspire Germans and German-speaking people and those who are interested in the cultures who live in Arizona under one roof. Give the German language a place in Arizona where it can prosper. Teach other people more about German culture and language. That’s how the “Treffpunkt” came to life.

The Treffpunkt is a nonprofit culture club that wants to connect German-speaking culture and language with international friends and partners. We have a facility in Scottsdale, Arizona where we offer a library with over 10,000 books, exhibition space, event space, and a small restaurant that serves German food. We closely work together with cultural and educational institutions in Arizona, such as the AC4GC, GACC, Institute Francaise, and also ASU.

Treffpunkt was orderly founded in October 2020 and we felt like we could hit the ground running. Little did we know, that a worldwide pandemic would close our doors only three months later. Ever since we have been able to maintain limited opening hours, or offer cultural events, such as presentations about Germany, German-speaking cultures, history, and much more. But on a very small scale. Projects needed to be postponed and we felt it was the right thing to do, to help fight the spread of Covid. But now we’re ready to start strong.

Like many nonprofit organizations, we depend on donations. We are a membership organization, so our members have throughout the pandemic always been contributing and we have a strong local support system and community, however, our latest project needs a little more help.

In summer 2022 our little restaurant will be taken over by two German friends who want to run hospitality operations. They currently run a successful delivery service for German food out of a pop-up kitchen. The City of Scottsdale requires us to implement changes to the kitchen, for example, a hood ($8,000), plumbing including a 75-gallon water heater ($5,400), electric work ($3,100), and a fire suppression system ($3,500) The prices have skyrocketed in the last couple of months. All these things cost money and that’s why we’re here. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to be able to remodel the kitchen to where it meets the requirements of the city of Scottsdale and implement changes to the restaurant that make it fit for everyday opening hours.

Our patio also needs a cover to protect patrons from the Arizona sun and ideally, we would like to improve our library. This would take another $6,000.

Manchmal kommt es anders als man plant. Dies ist mit dem Treffpunkt so geschehen. Der Treffpunkt hat im Oktober 2020 mitten in der Pandemie eröffnet. Wir haben mit grösstmoeglichem Einsatz die Lokalitäten mit ein wenig Farbe und Möbeln inklusive Küchenequipment so gestaltet, dass wir das Oktoberfest als Einweihungsfest feiern konnten.

Die anfängliche Euphorie hat uns nie verlassen, wurde aber durch die Pandemie gedämpft. Anfang 2021 haben wir den Treffpunkt für ein paar Monate ganz schliessen müssen.

Bis jetzt haben wir den Treffpunkt so entwickelt, dass wir über 300 Mitglieder haben, über 50 Sponsoren, eine Sprachschule, wir bieten Events und gemütliches Beisammensein. Eine wichtige Sache fehlt aber noch. Wir müssen unbedingt einige Umbauten in der Küche vornehmen und idealerweise Markiesen für den Biergarten anschaffen (von einem Mitglied zu 50% vom normalen Preis) sowie die Bibliothek schöner und effizienter gestalten. Ursprünglich hatten wir mit dem Vermieter vereinbart, dass diese Kosten der Küche auf die Miete umgelegt werden, da die Preise aber so extrem gestiegen sind, ist das nicht mehr möglich. Wir brauchen deshalb Geld, um diese Umbauten selber vornehmen zu können. Zum Glück haben wir schon Zusagen von einigen grösseren Unternehmen bekommen. Wir streben an, mindestens $20,000 über diesen Weg zu sammeln, das würde für die Küche reichen. In diesen $20,000 sind $8000 für die Dunstabzugshaube (Installierung), $3,500 für die Feuerlöschanlage, $3,100 für den Elektriker und $5,400 für den Klempner inklusive grösserem Boiler.

Im besten Fall, wie gesagt, würden wir noch gerne die Markise für unseren Biergarten anschaffen und die Bibliothek etwas verschönern. Das wuerde noch einmal zusaetzlich $6,000 kosten.
