Fund The New Static Age Records Mural

On December 23rd, 2019, shortly after we closed our record shop, someone defaced our long standing mural of Tina Turner with a clear symbol of racism: a nazi swaztika. Hours later, a good neighbor obscured the symbol with a sheet off their own bed. We then painted over the mural so the community wasn't subjected to its message.

We've unfortunately gained international attention over this. In light of this attention, we'd like to use this as an opportunity to promote what our shop is about. Static Age Records is and will always be a widely inclusive outlet for artistic expression. Our short list of what's not tolerated is hate of any form including  discrimination based on race, gender identity, religion, physical ability or sexual orientation. In our 16 years as a record store & venue, we've hosted over 1,000 performances aimed to nurture community and creative output.

We're not trying to lose any sleep over this; we'd like to get a new mural up as soon as possible and move forward in a positive way. We do understand this is just part of a bigger issue and that we're just one safe space among many, globally.

The $800 we aim to raise will pay for painting materials and for the artists' commission. Additional funding will be donated to the Southern Poverty Law Center and to daily operations of the shop, or to an organization of Tina Turner's choice (if she happens to get in touch with us over this).

From The Queen Of Rock N Roll's song "We Don't Need Another Hero":

So what do we do with our lives?
We only leave a mark.
Will our story shine like a light?
Or end in the dark?
Give it all or nothing!
