I’m Mindy, a former National Domestic Workers Alliance staffer and one of the founding members of the NDWA Staff Union. NDWA staff are on the frontlines every day organizing domestic workers and building power with nannies, housecleaners, and caregivers. I created this GoFundMe because my incredible former colleagues are ready to go on strike for a fair contract and to prevent union-busting layoffs. I couldn't be prouder of them. These folks love the NDWA mission and the domestic worker movement, and they are putting it all on the line to protect both.
That’s why they need our support.
In mid-September, NDWA management announced layoffs which disproportionally impacted unionized staff – 1 in 3 union members. Despite obvious financial concerns, NDWA has refused to consider good-faith efforts to mitigate the impact on union members.
NDWA is protecting less tenured executives while hiring brand new non-union roles, leaving union members to bear the brunt of this decision. Frontline workers, including former domestic workers, are being laid off. This is a political choice that values bureaucracy and highly paid management over the people who actually do the work. This is a betrayal.
While the union strikes and fights for NDWA's soul, they aren't getting paid. This fund is their lifeline for basic necessities. All donations will go directly to support the striking workers who have lost pay while standing up for what’s right. Every dollar helps ensure they can pay rent and cover basic expenses while they fight for the integrity of an organization they built and love.
Please donate today. Let’s show the NDWA Staff Union that the rest of the labor movement and their allies have their backs as they fight for a fair contract and against union-busting layoffs.
If we don’t have to use the funds for NDWA staff, we will pay it forward and donate to striking Starbucks workers.
