Hi, I'm Wade. I run the Move Weight Foundation, a federally recognized 501(c)(3), and this campaign funds public records access in San Antonio.

This work started in Miami, Oklahoma, when I tried to find out how my own city was operating and learned what it costs an ordinary person just to ask. So I built a way for people to ask without putting their name on anything.

San Antonio is the largest archive of any chapter we run. At sanantonio.exposetexas.org there are 1,161 public meetings indexed, every single one with its agenda attached and 502 with video, refreshed automatically every week.

The question this chapter exists to answer is about accountability that runs sideways. CPS Energy and SAWS - the city-owned electric and water utilities - answer to the City, and the City answers to voters. But no voter votes for a utility board directly. That is a legitimate structure and a common one. It also means the ordinary feedback loop is one step longer than people assume, and the records are where you close it.

There is a wall worth naming: San Antonio's agenda portal serves its documents only to signed-in accounts, so the public index is public and the packets are not. Open Records requests are the route the portal closed, and requests cost money. Bodies bill per page, per hour of staff time, per certified stamp, and you do not learn the price until after you ask.

Every dollar goes to records fees. The bill arrives, we pay it, and what comes back is published whole and unredacted - linked to the city's own copy so you can check us. I file in the Foundation's name so nobody in San Antonio has to attach their own name to a request.
