Our camp, Lake Natron Camp, is set at the edge of one of the most beautiful sites in the region (world?). An active volcano is our back drop, the lake our foreground and the Maasai of Ngare Sero our partners, hosts, guides, massage therapists, room cleaners and our community.
Back in 2013 we set up this camp as a passion project. Over a decade later, and by committing to the community we now have all but one position now employing people from the local village. We also pay a direct $15 per person per night that stays with us right to the village. All told this means that as we have become a successful business venture the income to the village, through both bednight fees and income from employment is now really significant. This success also has become a liability.
UPDATE: we're now using this platform to keep fundraising for MULTIPLE ongoing projects and at time of writing we are completing the Engare Sero roofing project, starting the girls dormitory in Malambo and started and ongoing 2 new classrooms Engare Sero. The village have taken on finishing the water tank (although we remain engaged) so that funds can be directed to these other projects.
FUTURE: definitely looking for support for larger water projects such as consolidated metal pipes to support all current take offs and simplify that. Too many people spending too much money on plastic pipes EVERY YEAR, which if simplified and robust could be spent elsewhere on developing better tourism products, education or the plethora of other income generating projects that could make a difference
