In 2016, Windsor City Council voted to eliminate commercial spaces on the main floor of the Pelissier Street Parking Garage and instead utilize the space for additional parking bays. Following this baffling decision, the Downtown Windsor BIA (DWBIA) placed a Freedom of Information request for additional information pertaining to City Hall communications leading up to the November decision.
This request was placed in order to better understand the rationale and reasoning behind Council’s decision, as it went against the advice of urban planners, architects, residents, and the downtown business community at large. This decision also contradicted a Council decision, earlier in 2016, to keep the existing commercial spaces at the Garage.
Responding to the DWBIA's request, the City Clerk quoted a sum of $13,672.20 to provide the DWBIA with the information. This information will include all meeting records, emails, and text messages between City administration, members of Council, and the Mayor’s office pertaining to the Pelissier Street Parking Garage.
Due to the exorbitant nature of this request, the Downtown Windsor BIA is launching this GoFundMe campaign to acquire the necessary funds for the requested information. We strongly believe that Windsorites deserve to know the communication process that lead to the disastrous November 2016 decision ― a decision that, by all professional accounts, will be detrimental to the vibrancy of Pelissier Street and downtown Windsor as a whole.
