We are raising funds for a community coalition made up of residents and intervenors who are challenging CMP's Phase 1 Greater Portland Transmission Upgrades case before the Maine Public Utilities Commission. This project would bring new and rebuilt high-voltage lines and two new or expanded substations through Cumberland, Falmouth, Portland, Westbrook, and Yarmouth. In several neighborhoods, this would be the first time high-voltage transmission infrastructure is sited there at all, and the project would be funded by Maine ratepayers.

We are pushing back because we believe this project has not been properly justified at the scale CMP is proposing. We are challenging the forecasting behind the project and seeking clear answers about how close energized 115kV wires would come to homes, including homes near or under the line, and whether there are places where standard clearance cannot be met. We have also raised concerns about locations near schools and outdoor public spaces.

This is deeply personal for the affected communities. Residents are facing fears of eminent domain, property loss, environmental impacts, and lasting changes to the visual character of long-standing neighborhoods for a project we believe remains unproven. There are also concerns about children's health near homes and schools.

Right now, we are operating on a no-cost contract with a technical consultant, but we need funding for that work to be fully completed and ready before October 23. Donations will also help retain a legal firm to advise us and file motions before that deadline.
