My ongoing series, "Not a Drill" includes involvement with the community devastated by the 2022 shooting in Uvalde, Texas, at Robb Elementary. Since 2022, I have been fostering a relationship with Lives Robbed to witness and understand the full impact of these massacres and the role of art to help communities process grief, establish connection, and enact change.
On January 10, 2025, our collaborative exhibition, "77 Minutes in Their Shoes" opens at Canopy Projects in Austin, Texas. Canopy Projects also served as the site for my initial large-scale outdoor installation, "Vigil for the 21," erected on the eve of the first-year mark of the school shooting.
As an artist and mother of two school-aged children, I feel compelled to respond to these atrocities and lack of action because gun violence devastates all people at personal, community, state, and national levels. "77 Minutes in Their Shoes" and my ongoing body of work, "Not a Drill," continue to open up visceral conversations about the fragility of life. In doing so, I arm individuals and communities with resources, solidarity, and a voice, rather than weapons.
Therefore, I am seeking $5000 to help support the costs associated with editing, printing and framing 28 intimate photographs of the families devastated by this event. Our collaborative goal is to honor the Uvalde victims and their families, continue the necessary conversations about gun violence, and put a face to the number one killer of children in America - guns.
"77 Minutes in Their Shoes" opens Friday, January 10, 2025 from 7:00-10:00 pm at Canopy Projects located at 916 Springdale Rd, Austin, TX 78702.
More detailed information about the exhibition and full day of panel discussions can be found here: https://www.77minutesintheirshoes.com/
