Serving One Meal - and Love!
Donation protected
This campaign has a simple purpose: to provide the means for ONE meal, on ONE of FIFTY TWO Saturday nights to those folks who are most vulnerable right now - the women, men and even children who rely on a hot dinner and the compassion offered out of the community kitchen at the Church in Regent Park.
I met Pastor Mark Goring as a volunteer at The Centre for Social Innovation, Regent Park. He oversees the success of the kitchen and his community in so many ways it is hard to list them all. Here are the short notes: Every Saturday night, no matter the weather, the challenges, the funding shortages, the worry, the distancing, even sacrifices to his own family, Mark guarantees that a meal and love are served from 40 Oak Street. And he does it with respect - with compassion, with humor, with fun. He knows his community - and he encourages community in our team as we work together.
Right now, the kitchen is only permitted to operate as a 'take away' endeavour; we are packing take-out containers masked and gloved . We offer meals across a double-table set up. Those who need the food must line up six feet from one another, and remain apart even though we are ALL starving for contact, comfort and connection.
We offer 300 to 400 meals a night. And yes, we serve those who are unhoused - who have suffered trauma or are struggling to overcome challenges, but we also serve meals to families with children who have run short of money to feed their loved ones for many, many reasons - particularly during this pandemic.
This is the ask: On July 11th, together with my partner in crime Heather Urquhart and several others up to similar mischief, we will cook a yummy meal and contribute in the best way we know how: love-filled food and compassionate service. Finances are tight right now for many of us, but if you could sponsor just ONE meal - five dollars, or even ten, you will help us get this dinner on its feet. Your donations will buy the groceries and then we will fold YOUR love into our cooking .
Thank you. Chi Miigwetch, Kinaniskomitin, Niya:weh.
