As students at the University of North Texas, we believe no one in our community should have to go hungry. That’s why we’re launching this campaign on behalf of the Denton Community Food Center (DCFC) — a nonprofit that has been a pillar of hope since 1974. Every month, DCFC provides a week’s worth of groceries to families, seniors, students, and individuals across Denton and Northern Denton County. Behind every box of food is a story of perseverance: a parent stretching a paycheck, a student juggling classes and bills, a senior choosing between groceries and medicine. For over fifty years, DCFC has ensured those stories include something essential — nourishment and dignity.

Right now, hunger is closer than many realize. More than 128,000 people in Denton County — 13.6% of our community — are food insecure, and DCFC has already seen a 30% increase in new applicants this year. Rising food costs, low wages, and unexpected hardships have put enormous strain on families and individuals alike. Yet even as the need grows, so does our community’s compassion. Denton has always been built on resilience — neighbors helping neighbors, students stepping up, and people coming together to care for one another when it matters most.

Our campaign, “From Pantry to Plate,” aims to turn that compassion into action. Every donation directly supports DCFC’s mission to provide food and hope for local families — and it doesn’t take much to make a big impact. Just $500 provides 133 meals, or a week’s worth of groceries for two families of four. Every gift, no matter the size, helps transform an empty pantry into a symbol of strength and renewal. When we unite — students, neighbors, and friends — we show what Denton truly stands for: generosity, dignity, and the belief that no one should face hunger alone. Together, we can fill plates, lift hearts, and keep hope alive — one meal at a time.
