From Home For Now to Home Forever

Hello! Some of you may already know my boys & I - but let me formally introduce to those that don’t know us.

My name is Linnaea Walker & I have been an early childhood educator in the city of Rochester for 10 years. I have 2 young children who I have provided for on my own since my oldest was 2. I’ve always thought of myself as a responsible person & have always been one to help those where I could & continue to serve a demographic of families who are low income & face adversity - I have always been low income due to my occupation, however - due to unforeseen circumstances with my most recent living situation with my two young boys - we have found ourselves at a homeless shelter & have been here since 12/19/23.

Since our intake here - I have applied to every housing authority in the area, been placed on multiple lists for subsidized housing - the waitlists are long.. with a MINIMUM wait of 24 months to get a voucher. There is simply too many people in a situation similar to ours for housing authorities to prioritize anymore based on need. I’m sure you’re all very familiar with how the market for renting & buying is currently, so affording a regular apartment on my income alone is highly unlikely.

Here’s where we need help - I was approved for an apartment in a low income housing complex that DOES take vouchers when one becomes available to me. I have this apartment in the palm of my hands that is affordable, & meets all of our needs financially - but I have to muster up first months rent & security by the 26th of January.. on my income alone - I cannot feasibly do this by myself. So I am asking the community to help us move into this apartment - so that we’re not stuck in shelters waiting for a housing voucher for 2+ years.

All funds donated will be directly used for the apartments first month/security & moving costs.

Updating to add that any additional donations beyond our goal will be used for necessary items like linens, bed frames for my children, establishing internet, & future rental payments. Thank you all so very much for helping my boys & I.
