Hello everyone,
We’re Debby and Burt, President and Vice President of Associação Alerta de Incêndio Florestal / Forest Fire Alert, here in the Algarve.
In July 2025, Burt underwent emergency open-heart surgery in Lisboa. Thanks to the incredible care and rapid response of the Bombeiros and INEM—including an emergency air ambulance transfer from Faro to Lisboa—he is here today continuing his recovery.
This fire season (15th May – 15th October), we are taking on a very special challenge.
♂️ The Challenge
We will cycle laps around Parque do Rio in Silves (approx. 1.8 km per lap), aiming to virtually connect 13 volunteer Bombeiros ( fire) stations across the Algarve—a total of 485 km. (calculated by google maps )
That’s around:
• 270 laps
• 12–13 laps per week
• A safe and steady recovery goal for Burt
Our Virtual Route Includes:
Lagoa → Portimão → Lagos → Vila do Bispo → Aljezur → Monchique → Messines → São Brás de Alportel → Alcoutim → Vila Real de Santo António → Faro → Albufeira → Alcantarilha → Silves
Why We’re Doing This
This challenge is about:
• Supporting Burt’s recovery journey
• Raising vital funds for our Bombeiros
• Giving back to the services that saved his life
Funds raised will help provide:
• Water and food for firefighters during active fires
• Basic first aid supplies
• End-of-season replacement forest fire uniforms for volunteer stations across the Algarve and lower Alentejo

We’ll be sharing regular updates, tracking our progress, and celebrating milestones along the way.
