Rebuilding After a Life of Struggle: Sponsor My Journey Home
After serving 23 years behind bars, I returned to a world that had moved on—but I didn’t come back empty. I came home with a mission: to grow, to give back, and to finally build a stable life with a place to call my own.
Over the last 4 years, I’ve worked hard to become a certified Peer Specialist, Mental Health First Aid Responder, and Mandated Reporter. I volunteer in Bed-Stuyed Brooklyn’s EMT training program and dedicate every day to helping my community. But now, I need a little help to keep pushing forward.
**My Next Step: Homeownership**
Today, I officially began the path to homeownership by attending the First-Time Homebuyer Orientation with NHS Brooklyn. I’m working toward qualifying for NYC’s HomeFirst Down Payment Assistance Program (which provides up to $100,000) and an FHA loan—tools that can turn my dream of owning a home into reality.
**Why I’m Asking for Support**
I currently rely solely on SSI, which barely covers the basics—rent, transportation, phone, car insurance, and daily living costs. While I complete the necessary steps toward homeownership, I need some sponsorship to stay afloat and focused.
**This Is Bigger Than Me**
This isn’t a handout—it’s a hand *up*. I’ve put in the time, the energy, and the heart. I’m not just rebuilding for myself; I’m proving that redemption and transformation are possible.
