The Friends of Schoodic Hall in Franklin, Maine is on a mission to save the former Maine State Grange building #420 located on Rt 182 in the heart of Franklin. The building (over 100-years-old) holds many memories for town folk and beyond. In its prime it was the hub for Grange member meetings, school plays and graduations, bean suppers, Scout gatherings, family reunions and so much more. Sadly, Grange membership dwindled and the building has set vacant for 8 years. Situated between the Franklin Community Center and the Franklin Fire Department, Schoodic Hall is, indeed, looking worn and tired.
Beginning in 2024 FSH began, in earnest, to bring the building back to life. First, the money was raised to buy the building from the Maine State Grange for $25,000. The second step was removing years of accumulating debris. Three rounded construction dumpsters later saw the dismantling of a three story chimney and the removal of the rear attached bathroom addition. Other than hiring someone to remove the chimney all of the above was accomplished by board members and valued volunteers. Where do we stand now you may wonder? Well, were moving forward with Phase 2 of this project!
Through grant writing, generous donations and fundraising events we've secured the $75,000 needed to raise the building, complete the groundwork and install a slab with a 4ft frost wall. Hopefully beginning work by late spring or early summer of this year. For our board members it's been a labor of great satisfaction with ever mounting excitement for what the future holds.
Ideas for future use include an indoor farmers' market, private functions, town suppers, plays, chess and cribbage tournaments, the use of a commercial kitchen, club gatherings and much more.
Please consider donating to our cause. Every dollar donated will go towards the restoration of the building. Help make an old gal shine once more.
