Friends of 250 is a community support group and we are raising money and support for the Emergency Supportive Housing at 250 Terminal avenue in Nanaimo B.C. which is set to open on November 30th
Due to a serious homelessness and housing crisis in our community the provincial government is putting in place two emergency supportive housing sites with 170 units total- one of which is the site at 250 Terminal avenue.
While there has been opposition to the project we feel that the housing is desperately needed in our community and that those who are homeless will benefit greatly from secure, affordable housing with built in supports (which in turn benefits our entire community) and that we, as a community, can help them be successful by supporting and welcoming them into our neighborhood.
With this goal in mind we are raising money to put together welcome baskets for the residents which will contain some basic toiletries, a note of encouragement and a few other items that are both practical and symbolic of the support they have from their neighbors. Our goal is $3200 which works out to $40 per resident for their basket.
We have met with staff from the Island Crisis Care Society (the housing provider) to gain an insight into what will be provided to residents who move in to ensure that our welcome baskets consist of items that are not provided upon move in and are practical things that residents will need. Recognizing that many on the streets have little to no access to showers and running water one of the goals is to provide everything someone would need to take a shower- which will likely be the first thing many residents want to do.
Any money that is received in access of what is needed to fund the welcome baskets will also be used for residents, which will be done in conjunction with staff in identifying specific needs of residents. For example if someone moves in that doesn't have shoes we could purchase a pair for them.
No donation is too small and every little bit makes a big difference to those transitioning into the supportive housing.
